The principal role of M&A advisors is to provide advice to buy-side and sell-side companies on their merger or acquisition. Typically, the company contracts the M&A advisor at the beginning of their deal process, endowing the M&A advisory with a mandate to take a more active role in their process in return for a retainer fee and a success fee - usually a percentage of the total size of the eventual transaction.
